Basically, every essay or story depends on a plot for content. A plot is essentially the backbone of a piece of documentation. An essay or story needs a plot the same way curry needs chili powder for flavour. With the plot comes the introduction/orientation, complication, sequence of events, climax, resolution and the coda/epilogue. These sections make up a story. Without them, a story is incomplete.
Characters bring life to a story. They play a major role in conveying the story to a reader. A character is part of the plot, they may be introduced at any time into the story. Flavour is added to a story when a character is portrayed in explicit detail. A rich blend of various characters deepens and enhances the content in a story and endears it to a reader.
In a story, a proper setting is also needed. A detailed setting tells the reader where the various events are occuring, minimising any chance of confusion. Properly set, it gives a reader a clearer sense of the progress of the story and a sense of anticipation about what might happen.
An interesting story needs twists to grab a reader's attention and interest. Twists are commonly found in almost every story and basically, they complicate the story with a new revelation. Twists spice up a story's content and they make the reader want to continue reading the story. All successful stories have hidden twists; they may be minor, major, subtle, or violent.
Overall, these four elements make up the main structure of an interesting story. Without them, it will be like eating sweets without sugar.
